The brightness distribution of long GRBs

GRBs differ vastly by brightness. The rare, very bright tail of the distribution contains events that outshine the dimmer ones by several orders of magnitude. Clearly, at least part of the reason behind these differences lies in the different distances at which these sources are located. Intrinsic luminosity scatter is also at play. What does the brightness distribution teach us about the GRB population? Does the expansion of the Universe leave its signature in the shape of the distribution?
